I hate Wide Sargasso Sea

I never really understood the book in the first place due to a lack of a good plot. It is not fun witnessing someone's life through multiple tragic events. Secondly, Rochester is worse than a sex tourist. He doesn't have any respect for local culture and customs, marries someone he barely met and knew, cheats on her, and removes her identity. First by changing her name, which doesn't sound English at all, and then declaring her mad, when a mad person can say that Rochester is mad himself, and then kidnaps her back to England, and locks her in an attic. And 100+ pages of this bullshit is in a "critically acclaimed" novel.

Alright, Antoinette wasn't supposed to have a good life at all, because readers of Jane Eyre would understand what will happen to her in Part 2 and 3. However, that doesn't mean her life in Part 1 should be that tragic. I cannot imagine how a book can become successful when the main character's childhood is really sad, and then gets even more tragic (although it is kind of her mistake for marrying Rochester after they barely knew each other), prompting her to commit suicide. It would've been better if Antoinette had a good life in Part 1, or if she actually has gone mad like what Rochester said instead of Rochester actually going mad.

  1. Well, I must admit "Wide Sargosso Sea" was not my favorite book I don't believe that it was as bad as one may have put it to be. There are a lot of things in the book that I see that could hook a reader. Whether it is the "lost" or "broken" love story between two non-lovers, or maybe the tragic story of Antionette. It's really how one interprets a book.

  2. I liked "Wide Saragosso Sea" while the story was very sad I think it was one of the most interesting to have discussions on. While the two main characters stories are tragic there are still moments in their life that are happy and I think that they make their lives somewhat better.
